The term piano is a short form for the word piano forte which is a derivative of the name for the Italian instrument ‘clavicembalo’. It is believed that the piano in pianoforte refers to a certain standard level of playing and forte refers to a level of playing transcending the normal. Together they refer to the instrument’s response to the touch of the player working at the keyboard and thus creating different notes at the same level by causing variations in the inertia with which the hammers of the piano hits the strings. The piano tutorial further elucidate on these intricacies that go into learning exactly how to play piano. Playing piano involves pressing the keys of the keyboard which makes a hammer the head of which is covered with felt to hit the steel strings. The vibration thus caused travels by means of resonance through a bridge to the sounding board thus producing loud sounds. As the key is released it triggers a damper which then stops the vibration of the strings thus effectively wiping out any sound.
