It is believed that the piano in pianoforte refers to a certain standard level of playing and forte refers to a level of playing transcending the normal. Together they refer to the instrument’s response to the touch of the player working at the keyboard and thus creating different notes at the same level by causing variations in the inertia with which the hammers of the piano hits the strings.
